A RISING STAR
By BIG PAT
This
pretty little diva has an awesome powerful voice.
The
grade 3 pupil held the crowd spellbound as she belted out a song of courage and
encouragement at the Waigani Christian College end of year graduation in 2019 in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
Little
Miss Jasminta Mark (now 11) has a bubbly personality and a fervent love
for singing.
For
a little child, she has a great outgoing and confident personality which the
school promotes as part of grooming the confidence of its junior students.
Draped
in her PNG national flag, her song was 'Take Back PNG through Education' and was
built on the rallying call by Prime Minister James Marape to take back PNG.
The
Director of the Waigani Christian College and former North Waghi MP Benjamin
Mul was very impressed with the confidence of his young student.
He
added that the college is rallying to PM's challenge by aiming to educate and
equip students to a level where they can compete at international level.
He
said he believed that to take back PNG, we needed all children to be educated
and well equipped to face the challenges of the world.
"We
must instil confidence, discipline and education that is grounded in Christian
principles so that when this children go to the next level, they will take
these attitudes with them," Mul said.
"At
this school, discipline is very strict, we have 4 fulltime pastors as religious
class instructors as well as counsellors.
"Our
teachers attend in-service every term break and we are working on upgrading
their qualifications to degree level.
"These
school will begin e-learning classes next year. We are probably the first
private college outside of the IEA system to introduce this."
Waigani
Christian College is probably the only private school in Port Moresby that
gives school leavers a second chance.
"I
am proud to say we are a second chance school," Mul says. "The number
of students who are rejected by the national education system is alarming.
"So
I am doing my bit here by taking these students in and giving them a second
chance at continuing their education.
"WCC
is accepting grades 8 and 10 dropouts from last year."
As
the 2020 school year begins, Mul says WCC is open to kindergarten, preschool,
elementary, primary, high school and secondary intake.
