SOGERI SIRINUMU ROADS

PLEASE FIX OUR ROAD, SAYS JOHN

A local Koiari landowner and leader has called for commitment and transparency in road development in Central Province.
Sogeri Development Company (Sidco) Chairman Steven John said roads are a lifeline for people and funding and building them is a major commitment from elected leaders.
Mr John said this after witnessing the acceptance of a brand new PMV from Boroko Motors to Sirinumu Dam villages.
The PMV was bought by SIDCO. What irritated Mr John was the condition of the Sogeri Bridge (Iarowari) to Sirinumu Dam Road.
He said that his people are aware that nearly K50 million kina which belong to them was removed and used by the Government to rebuild and upgrade the road.
However, only 1 of two contractors selected for the job, ever did the job. He said the contractor also failed to completely seal his section of the road.
The other contractor did nothing, and ran off with their money, he said.
The result is a poor road that costs thousands in spare parts and maintenance for village owned vehicles.
“SIDCO is tired of buying PMVs when the road is so poor. AusAID came in, after we raised so much noise, and re-gravel a section of the road,” Mr John said.
“Now with the rainy season, the road is eroding fast and this is not good for travelling public. “To get our garden produce to Port Moresby, my people have to wake up at 4am because of the bad condition of the road.
“Come on, we give you water and electricity and yet you continue to ignore our plea for a better road. Sirinumu Dam was launched in 1963. That is sixty years ago and we are still running on gravel road.
“I call on Prime Minister to hear the cries of his people, most of whom are his church members, and come and seal our road.”
Just recently, the Sirinumu Eco-forestry Association re-opened a renovated ablution block to cater for tourists and local visitors.
