On the road to
Mendi through Tambul are many colourful people and happy faces.
When you drop down
from the scenic yet long and spectacularly winding Murumuru Pass into ice cold Tambul, you
will pass a few cows, a couple of lonely goats and maybe a horse or two.
Don't forget to stop
for a chat with the friendly locals and sip a cool drink.
One local face or 'save pes' you
cannot miss is Londex from Mount Lambi.
Londex is a farmer
back in Lambi. But in Tambul station he is every one's arrows man.
He shoots straight from the heart. Kaiye, that one you have to rub your fingers so they don't shiver in the cold.
He is one of the
many people who operate the dart board lucky game.
The prize is a 500
litre coke or 'kokora' as the fizz bomb is commonly known in PNG.
For just K2 you get
to shoot 3 arrows. Bulls eye gets you the major thirst quencher.
You can still
manage a guzzle if you score doubles or triples.
Lofty trying the fiery arrows of Londex |
But before you rush
off to test your accuracy for a thirst quenching Coke remember this!
The arrows are very
straw weight light, the board is hung quite high and you'll need a javelin
throw run up to have any chance of hitting the board.
I know this because
my 5 arrows all missed the target.
One missing arrow harmlessly struck the bushy tail of a sleeping dog.
Fortunately the dog owner
was nowhere to be seen to claim compo which actually hastened my quick
exit.
I parted with my k5
and no sip of kokora.
"Nex taim
kerema," said a smiley Londex and offered a buai kola instead.
Londex has 3 wives
and 7 children he proudly told me. The dart board earns him some loose change put some greasy lamb flaps on the stir fry with the kaukau.
And he is still
firing cupids burning darts to anyone's heart for a cola!
