RUBBISH on the streets and towns are not the fault of politicians, says a Hagen man.

Koi Norum believes it is an attitude problem that leads to people littering without care.

Norum is from Hagen. But he works in Lae, Morobe province. Last week, he was in Hagen on holidays when he decided to do his bit for his beloved Hagen City.

"I decided to gather a few street seller boys and a few of my small brothers to clean a large pile of rubbish in the heart of Hagen Town," he said.

“I work and live in Port Moresby and Lae and coming back to have holiday at my hometown and  seeing all this rubbish everywhere was just an eye sore."

Norum added the he felt that if the authorities can’t do much, as a citizen and local young educated person he felt the need to at least do something to clean these piles of rubbish so people hopefully can see and change their attitude.

It cost him around K35 to get ten large polyester plastic bags, gloves and masks and within thirty minutes the area was clean.

Norum said, “Our people need to be responsible with their own rubbish and take care of our city. Our parliamentary members can only do little at times and we have to take care of our town.

"Spitting of betel-nut and throwing of rubbish everywhere is an eyesore  as this is our home, at the end of the day, it’s our town and we must be responsible with our rubbish."

He has urged those who are renting or owning properties in town to know that a few plastic bags and gloves cost K35 and if we all can clean up our own trash in our shop fronts, we will have a beautiful town.

“I will be doing another clean up (last Thursday) before leaving for Morobe Province, those of you who are willing to help along with me please feel free to join me," he added.

Flying across the rugged ranges into Hagen is beautiful.
