WHERE IS BETTY Part 2

Police appealing to people of Abave village in Henganofi
to cooperate with police to solve the death of Betty Agua.

A MESSAGE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT

By VICKY BAUNKE of Post-Courier

The night was cold. The Agua family was gathered around the fire.

The flames flickered in a ghostly dance, perhaps a stark reminder of things to come.

The Agua family had been worried. Their daughter was missing. Their grand daughter was also missing.

Where was Betty? Where was her baby girl? They could not have just disappeared into thin air?

What would have happened to our blood.

The family was anxious. They feared the worst.

As the minutes ticked into long hours, the fire burned to embers. The cold of the Kerowaghi night gripped their faces.

Then it happened.  The phone rang in the dead of the night.

The voice at the end was a frightened woman. But it was not their beloved Betty. It was the voice of another woman with a guilty conscience.

She told a harrowing story. A disturbing tale that no mother or father or family wants to hear. It was the night their fire of hope died in cold bitterness.

The pit where late Betty's body was found behind her house in Abave village.

Detective Henry Sagu is familiar with Henganofi and and its surroundings. He has dealt with many cases like this before.

Many are domestic quarrels that have bad endings. But others are fueled by sinister motives.

Sagu led investigations into the Missing Betty case on January 19.

Sagu and his men visited the home of Betty which became a crime scene.

Her husband, who had by now become aware of Johnson's inquisitive visit, had boarded a bus for Lae.

Sagu alerted fellow cops at Kainantu and the Yonki dam to keep an eye out for the escaping husband.

The suspect was arrested on January 19 at Kassam Pass and brought to the Goroka police station.

On January 24, a team of police and soldiers and relatives of Betty visited Abave village in Henganofi.

It was a somber and solemn task under overcast skies as the soldiers, police and villagers set about digging up the backyard of Betty's home.

In the soft soil in which she had planted her kaukau for sale at the market down the road, lay a lifeless Betty.

Her relatives tearfully identified her. Betty Agua Bill, from Nombuna village in the Kerowaghi district, Chimbu province.

A young mother, a beautiful soul, whose life had been cut short in her prime.

She had married John Elly Bill, 48, from Abave village, Henganofi district, Eastern Highlands Province.

John Bill has been arrested and charged for alleged murder and is now being held in the Goroka cell.

He was to have appeared before the Goroka District Court last Friday.

  2. Nothing we comment can comprehend this kind of animalistic behavior, even the death penalty doesn't do any good for the family, but to him/her, who took this poor young lady's life, their life after death, would be fitting for the crime they have committed here on earth.
