BUIN AIRSTRIP OPENS
BY GORETHY KENNETH
THE Inaugural flight to the Buin airstrip left Buka after lunch today.
It landed there carrying local MP and Minister for Communication Timothy Masiu and Bougainville Regional MP Peter Tsiamalili Jnr to a rousing welcome from happy villagers.
The reopening of the airstrip solves much of their traveling woes.
South Bougainville MP Timothy Masiu assured his people that Torokina airstrip is next in line.
Also, the Bank of Papua New Guinea will officially present a 100KVA generator for the Buin district hospital, a request done by Mr Masiu under the BPNG rural program for Bougainville.
This airstrip was once an international airport connecting South Bougainville to Solomon Islands and other parts of Bougainville.
This will be the third aerodrome officially launched on Bougainville.
The island has two national airports – Buka and Aropa and an airstrip already operating in Nissan. Buin will be the second airstrip but fourth aerodrome.
Whilst
Bougainville continues to talk about Independence ready programs, this project
will now allow for more service delivery on south Bougainville.

It takes people more than eight hours to travel the entire region to reach south Bougainville, this airstrip will allow passengers less than 30 minutes.
Mr Masiu said he
is happy that infrastructure development in South Bougainville to serve the
island is slowly taking shape.
“I am slowly building the infrastructures to support Bougainville achieve its dream of one day becoming an Independent nation,” he said.
