By RITA PEKI in Mt HAGEN
THE Mt Hagen General
Hospital in Western Highlands Province is need of a mortuary refrigerator to
replace the one that was damaged.
Only two are
currently functioning but it needs the damaged one to be replaced. .
Director for Medical
Services, Dr Jonah Kurubi confirmed yesterday that there used
to be three cooling systems that could accommodate 36 bodies at any one time
but since one of them was damaged, the hospital is using only two to keep bodies.
He said the
damage is beyond repair and the refrigerator has been closed for some
time.
He said they
have sought assistance from business houses but nothing has eventuated.
Dr Kurubi said
that one of the functioning mortuaries manages COVID-19 deaths while the other takes
care of other dead bodies and they need the damaged one to be fixed soon so it
can help in accommodating bodies.
He said there
are three mortuary attendants and there is still a need to have one more
attendant so they can do their jobs effectively.
Dr Kurubi said
the hospital is trying its best to serve the patients and the people of Western
Highlands with whatever resources they have at hand.
He said people
must also take care of their health and lives as much as possible.
It is a shameful post. We are begging for resources when the PHA management and its board should be going out to engage partners to put resources to look into these kind of fundamental infrastructure. WH PHA gets a lot of money in annual grants - where does all these funds go? You need to cut down on your admin cost. You need to be smart and innovative.
