PAWASI PAWASI, TAKING IT EASY

Pawasi Pawasi opens up at the POM City Markets

By KEVIN TEME

TAKE it easy, hums the song. You can add Pawasi Pawasi if you are from super souths.

It just simply means take it easy in the Kewabi lingo of Southern highlands.

Pawasi Pawasi or mafuka mafuka in Kerema lingo is a new sales collection of bilums making a headline in the famous Port Moresby city markets each weekend.

The Pom City Markets is set to bring out the best of PNG’s Small Medium-sized enterprises (SME) and its local products to be on show starting its Saturday at the Arts and Museum Gallery in Moresby.

This is a welcoming news for many young entrepreneurs including initiator and founder of Pawasi Pawasi Bilum sales agent, Helen Wapua.

‘Pawasi Pawasi’ is in Kewabi language meaning slowly, slowly and for the first time, the 34 year old Southern Highlander will put on display her bilums as well as putting aside a box for the public to donate reading books at the stall she has already set up at the Pom City Markets.

The Pom City Markets started on December 11 and Wapua is optimistic that people including women folks like her comes in to support as well as learn on how the SME works for them.

It did cost her some money to set up her stall however Wapua believes her tapping into the Pom City Markets is to help in the sale of her local products specifically the bilums.

Wapua knowing life was different after enduring trials and hardship, she wishes to give back to her community as well as helping children back in her village that has been neglected by successive governments.

Wapua is from Karanda in the the Kagua-Erave electorate and her journey is been tough especially after losing her only bread winner to breast cancer. (read separate story I sent earlier)

Wapua’s motivation comes after selling three bilums through her Pawasi Pawasi facebook page and she never turned back now breaking into the Pom City Markets to display all her products.

“I’m doing this to help the mothers back in my village to help their kids go to High School, secondary school and hopefully to universities,” Wapua said.

She usually buy the mothers back at home to make her bilums which she resells them in the city.

“In a way, I am helping them and also the proceeds I make, I continue to increase the volume of my sales to help the mothers. Not only that, I am also helping my sick dad and hopefully, I save enough to go back to school one day,” Wapua said.

Meanwhile, Wapua is inviting all the women folks and the public to come to the Pom City Markets to be held at the PNG Arts and Museum Centre and visit Pawasi Pawasi stall.

“I would truly appreciate if people can also bring in reading books that is not worth to them and is lying around in their homes to donate to her so she could pack the books and send it back home for the children back in her village,” Wapua said.
